When I first started this class on the first day of school, I thought I knew a lot about writing, but I was most defiantly wrong. In high school I did not write a lot of papers and it really showed when I started writing papers in college. Mrs. Vance has given me so much good advice on how to write an A paper. I have learned so much about writing and the steps you need to take to have a good paper. The whole process to writing a paper was a lot of more details that go into it. I struggled with citations a lot when writing my first paper. In high school they did not teach the correct way to cite your sources. When writing I also struggled with run on sentences and fragments. One thing I learned this term was always research a lot and get multiple people to proof you’re your paper. I have learned a lot this term and can’t wait for next term.
Reflecting on writing papers
I have written a total of 5 essays for this class. Each one was different in their own way. The paper I wrote the best and was the most excited to write about was Essay #4, the paper I wrote on the Phenix City Story. This essay was the easiest to write about because it was easy to find sources for this topic. The hardest essay I had to write was the last one, Essay #5. This particular essay was the Argumentative Essay, about how violent video games affect people’s behaviors. I found this essay hard because I did not choose my topic very wisely. I know nothing about video games or what they are about. Although I struggled, I did write some good essays. One thing I struggled with a lot was run on sentences and fragments. I learned a lot in Term one and can’t wait to see what Term 2 holds.
Strongest Source
I used many sources for this paper, but one source was the most helpful. This source was from the website CNN. To summarize this source, violent video games are having a big effect on adolescents these days. Some people think that violent video games are affecting how the game players act. These games are becoming more and more realistic. In 2015 some sources found a relation between violent video games and aggressive behavior. Although there are not a lot of sources that have factual evidence on this subject, the statistics that are shown are very useful. President Trump has stated that he thinks these types of games are the reason for so many mass shootings and other attacks on the United States

Argumentative Essay/Current Event: Hurricane Dorian
– There have been multiple horrific tropical storms hitting the United States and near the United States. On September 4thHurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas and flooded and destroyed basically the whole island. Approximately 70,000 people are now homeless and forty-three dead. The hurricane was supposed to hit Florida and some parts of Georgia. After hitting the Bahamas, it moved to the Carolina’s. This was recorded to be the most powerfulstorm to hit the Bahamas. The land of the Bahamas is mostly destroyed because of hurricane Dorian. The death toll keeps getting higher as the search for people in the Bahamas is increasing. It seems like recently the United States and islands around the U.S. have been getting some deadly weather. It is terrible what is going on with the tropical storms all around. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-49553770
Keys of College Success
There are many things freshman students or just students in general do not know about how to be successful in college. There are a lot of rules you can stand by to be successful in college and I will state just a few from a source I have. Always start out taking at least one small class every semester. This helps keep the small class setting and engaged learning maintained. A small or easier class is a good class to take for an easy class to not be as stressed during the school year. Another tip is to engage with staff like teachers and advisors. If becoming friends with faculty means they might be able to help throughout the school year. I have learned that college is a lot more different than high school for many reasons. It is good to make friends, especially with people in your classes. https://grownandflown.com/success-in-college-research/
The Battle of Columbus
The Battle of Columbus was a very significant battle in the Civil War. It was considered to be the last battle of the Civil War. This war took place on April 16, 1865. At a place that was once known as Girard which is now known as Phenix City. The battle took place on the land of Girard and that’s why it was also known as the Battle of Girard. This battle took place because someone destroyed the telegraph lines that had the message that General Lee surrendered. Although they were unprepared, they still fought. The battel took place on a bridge so one side could have the advantage but at the end of the day they were the ones with the disadvantage. The troops of the Union saw the trap and had the chance to escape but now the bridge is totally destroyed to this day. This battle made Columbus and Phenix City the historic place they are today. http://www.americancivilwarstory.com/battle-of-columbus.html
Why we crave horror movies
Reading through Stephen King’s essay about horror movies I agreed and disagreed on some parts. When he said that we people are all mentally ill, I did not agree with that. Some people really are crazy, and it shows but other people are normal. But I did agree when he said that people go to the theater to see scary movies to prove that they are notscared, and I do believe that, speaking from experience. I mostly agree with everything he is saying in this essay as I read through it. We do things that scare us to get a thrill and have fun in life. I agree that emotions play a big part in the way we handle scary things. Some people enjoy watching people get killed while others cringe at the though of murder. Stephen compares a lot if movies to real life situations and he makes it sound very convincing. That’s why I agree with what he states in most of this essay. http://faculty.uml.edu/bmarshall/Lowell/whywecravehorrormovies.pdf
Bragging about myself
I rarely brag about myself, because I find it kind of annoying. But I have done some things in life to brag about. For example, I am on full scholarships at CVCC and was offered multiple other scholarships my senior year. I also earned a certificate to be a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant), my senior year in high school. While in school I have kept a high GPA while having a job. I work 5 days a week after school. Any money that I want to spend I have to earn it myself, whether its cleaning my grandparents’ house or from my job. In the last couple of weeks, I have been making A’s on everything in school and have really been thriving in school. Also, I have been serving on the serve team at my church on Wednesdays and Sundays every other week. When I have free time, I clean up around the house and get ahead of my chores. I don’t really have a lot of things to brag on myself about, but these are things I could think about for the time being.
Types of College Students
There are so many different types of college students. College changes people and their personality, speaking from experience. In college there are so many responsibilities and things you have to worry about that high school took care of for you. The types of personalities college people have been the procrastinators, strict grade people, and the class skippers. Procrastinators obviously do not care about their grade because they never try or wait last minute to turn in their stuff. Procrastinators must have low anxiety levels and no stress. In high school I was the biggest procrastinator but since I have been in college, I have barley procrastinated. Another type of college student is the people who care about their grades so much and freak out if they don’t get an A on their schoolwork. I care about my grades and try my best at everything I do but if I don’t make an A I won’t freak out. We all know of the students who don’t come to class. Those types if students obviously don’t care about their grades. If they did care they wouldn’t skip class. There are many types of college students but those are just a few examples.
The Phenix City Story
Phenix City was not the same city in the 1930’s as it is today. The old Phenix City was given the name Sin City for various reasons. The whole city was a hot mess with all the illegal activities and bad people running the town. Sin City’s law enforcement was corrupt, and they were blackmailed by gang members who owned the streets. Law enforcement constantly turned the other way to illegal things that were going on throughout the city. Phenix City was filled with prostitutes, gambling, and murders. By the end of the Sin City era Phenix City was in loads of debt. When local citizens tried to help clean up the city, the local gangs threatened them. Phenix City had well-known casinos all over the nation. People came from all over the nation to visit the nasty city known as Sin City.http://www.encyclopediaofalabama.org/article/h-3973
