General Benning

Henry L. Benning was born and raised in Georgia. He went to college at The University of Georgia and graduated in 1834. After that he went to study law in Talbot County. Henry was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia in the 1850’s. Then from 1861-1965 he was a brigadier general during the Civil War. After helping gather troops for the Civil War he became seventeenth in the infantry in 1861. Benning made many big impacts during the Civil War. After the war he returned home to Columbus. He continued to practice law all the way up until his death. Benning was actually on his way to the courthouse when he had a massive stroke. That day, July 10, 1875 he passed away. In 1918 the United States Army established an infantry school located in Muscogee County. The camp which later became a fort was named “Fort Benning”. I had no idea that was where Fort Benning got its name until I read this article.
